Matt won two TAMMIES (Tucson Area Music Awards)

In 2008: Best Traditional Jazz Artist and Best Guitarist.

 

 

BIO:

 

Matt Mitchell is a guitarist who loves music. He expresses and communicates that joy in his live performances. He is lucky enough to be one of the few who get to make a living doing what he loves. Matt has maintained a 200-gigs-a-year schedule for 15 years. He has done this by being professional, having a great attitude, being able to play diverse styles and by being a great guitarist.

 

PLAYING STYLES & AVAILABLE GROUPS

 

- Jazz music with a thorough knowledge of ALL the major styles including: Dixieland, Django, big band, swing, be-bop, cool, Brazilian, hard-bop, avant-garde, fusion, modern.

- Classical music with a thorough knowledge of ALL the major styles including: Renaissance, Baroque, French ‘Impressionists”, Brazilian guitar, Spanish guitar, Flamenco guitar.

- Other styles include klezmer, rock ‘n roll, and many world styles.

 

- Active groups for hire include: Matt & Marianne, The Klezmopolitans, The Matt Mitchell Duo/Trio, The Hot Club of Tucson, Matt Mitchell Solo Guitarist.

 

EDUCATION & AWARDS

 

- Bachelors of Arts in Classical Guitar Performance in 1995 from the University of Arizona.

 

- Tucson Jazz Society’s Young Artist Award 1995.

- TAMMIES (Tucson Area Music Awards) has awarded Matt numerous times including Best Traditional Jazz Artist in 2000 and 2008 and Best Guitarist in 2008.

- Matt was nominated for the 2002 Arizona Arts Award (a $24,000 award), the state’s largest unrestricted award to an individual artist.

 

PRESS & CAREER HIGHLIGHTS

 

- Matt was featured in the Tucson Weekly in October 2002.

- Matt was featured on PBS television on Arizona Illustrated in August 2003.

- Matt was featured on KUAZ radio (a NPR station) on Arizona Spotlight on October 13, 2006.

 

- Matt performed at the Smithsonian Institute in Washington D.C. on July 4, 2005 with Grammy nominee Vince Redhouse.

- Matt has performed with a lot of great local performers - from Al Perry and Calexico to The Tucson Symphony and all of Tucson’s best jazz musicians.

- Matt has played all over Tucson in the past 15 years - making a living doing around 200 gigs a year.
